Felonies

Although any crime is serious, the penalties for a felony are significantly higher than they are for misdemeanors.  With a misdemeanor, the maximum punishment is 11 months and 29 days.  The punishment for a felony is over a year and can even be up to life in imprisonment.  The punishment for a felony will depend on the type of crime and also the individual’s criminal history.

In Tennessee, there are five types of felonies.  These are broken down as follows.

E Felony – 1- 6 years

D Felony – 2-12 years

C Felony – 3-15 years

B Felony – 8-30 years

A Felony – 15-60 years

If convicted of a capital crime such as murder, the sentence can be up to life in imprisonment and even the death penalty.
